Springer Nature (DEAL contract)
For 2024 and 2025
The JLU Giessen participates in the DEAL contract with Springer Nature (contract period: 2024-2028). The contract enables Open Acess publishing in SpringerNature journals in two ways.
Publishing in a Gold Open Access Journal
In a gold open access journal all articles are published freely available without an embargo, but an article processing charge (APC) has to be paid. The DEAL contract grants a 20% discount on the APCs, if the corresponding author has a JLU-affiliation.
Exception: There is no discount on APCs for a small number of fully open access journals which are also part of the contract; these are Nature Communications and Scientific Reports. To see which journals are excluded from the discount, see the list of journals linked below.
The open access team will receive a notification upon acceptance and will contact you for details about the payment.
For APCs up to 2.000 € the JLU OA publication fund covers 50% of the costs. APCs above 2.000 € can be supported by JLU funds with 1.000 € (incl. VAT). As junior scientist in their PhD process or with a PhD-graduation that is not older than five year the JLU OA publication fund covers 75% and a maximum of 1.500 €.
Publishing in a hybrid journal
A hybrid journal publishes single articles in open access usually after paying an optional fee. The DEAL contract enables to publish manuscripts open access without paying such a fee, if the corresponding author has a JLU-affiliation. The costs are covered by the DEAL contract.
You can download a list of journals that is updated on a regular basis to see which journal is gold open access and which is hybrid.
