Overview
Sustainable food economics deals primarily with economic issues of the food industry and food trade, i.e. with companies that deal with the production and distribution of food and luxury foods. The food chain is examined from the procurement of raw materials to the delivery of the finished products to the consumer. Processes, decisions and consequences of food production on markets and in processing companies of the food industry are considered. Teaching and research is conducted in the areas of:
- Business studies in the food industry
- Market analysis and marketing in food markets
- National and international agricultural policy
- World food economy

Composition of the study programme
The study programme is composed of 20 modules:- 8 core (compulsory) modules (6 CP each)
- 8 profile (elective) modules (6 CP each)
- a written Master's thesis (equivalent to 4 modules)
Half of the course modules are compulsory (core modules), the other half of the course modules can be chosen from the entire range of courses offered by the department and partly from other departments of JLU Giessen (profile modules).
Specialisation is possible by choosing the profile modules. The degree programme is successfully completed when all modules have been passed.
The core modules (compulsory modules) are:- Applied Econometrics
- Corporate Communication
- Organisational design in the agricultural and food industry
- Process technology in food and service enterprises
- International agricultural and food policy
- Corporate management in the agricultural and food sector
- Food quality: coordination, decision-making and institution
- Market theory
Master's thesis
With the Master's thesis students can demonstrate their ability to work independently on a concrete, delimited topic within a limited period of time.

Admission requirements
The admission to this master's programme requires a relevant Bachelor's degree. The following Bachelor's degrees are currently considered relevant:
- Nutritional Sciences
- Nutrition and Supply Management
- Nutrition and Food Science
- Ecotrophology
The Examination Committee may recognise other degrees as equivalent within the scope of the application and admission procedure after a case-by-case examination.

Application/enrollment
- The study program is not subject to admission restrictions.
- The enrollment period for the winter semester begins in early June and for the summer semester in early December.
- The end of the enrollment period is determined each year, please check the application portal during the enrollment period.
