The borrowing service at the Marburg location takes place via the Marburg University Library. The current regulations for borrowing multimedia devices at Marburg University Library apply. You need a registered reader's card (UCard/Dienstausweis) or you can apply for one.

Borrowing VR  - How to

Planning

You consider which devices you need based on the available devices. If you are not sure which VR headsets are recommended for your event or project, you are welcome to contact us for personal advice.

Loan request

Once you have found the devices you want, write an email five workdays in advance to your desired pickup date. We will check whether the selected equipment is available in the specified period and reserve it for you. You will receive a reservation confirmation and a confirmation of the specified pick-up date from us by mail.
Important: For the reservation and for the borrowing process, a proof of employment from one of the joint universities, Justus-Liebig University Giessen, University of applied sciences Mittelhessen or Philipps-University Marburg is required.

Pick up

The pick-up date will be settled with you in the confirmation e-mail. We will fill out the loan form when you pick up your VR headset and if desired, give you a short introduction.
Important: We require an official identification document for identification purpose. The reservation of uncollected devices expires the following day.

During the loan period

If there are any problems with the devices or questions about their operation during your loan period, you can contact the Lab for Innovative Teaching team either via email at labnidit or via telephone at +49 641 – 99 18052 (Maraike Büst) or +49 641 – 99 18055 (Eva Dabrowski).

Return

We can either arrange a separate appointment for the return or you can drop by during the Open Lab Day. You find the current opening hours at: uni-giessen.de/lab. A check for completeness and a functional check will take place on return and any damage will be recorded in the damage report. 

Costs

Borrowing is free for members of the joint universities. Free loan scenarios are, for example:
- the use of VR headsets in a university course
- the use of VR headsets for research purposes
- the use of VR headsets for student project work as part of a university course

Borrowing Authorisation

Members of the joint universities are authorised to borrow (Justus-Liebig-University Giessen, University of applied sciences Mittelhessen, Philipps-University Marburg). Members of the university are professors, students, scientific staff, tenured scientists, senior scholars, medical employees, administrative and technical employees und the president. (Grundordnung der Justus-Liebig-Universität Gießen, 2.20.00 Nr. 1, I. Abschnitt, § 1 Mitglieder und Angehörige).

I've never worn a VR headset before, but I'm curious. Which headset do I choose when I go on borrowing? 

In general, it is possible to borrow several VR headsets and test them at your own pace. If required, we give you a brief introduction to the headsets before you borrow them.

Where can I use the borrowed devices?

Our devices are primarily intended for use in buildings of the university and external rooms that are frequently used by the university. Should you wish to use the devices in other locations, please let us know.

Where do I find the borrowing station and where can i pick up the equipment?

What is the maximum time I can borrow the VR headsets? 

The maximum loan period is two weeks, after which the loan period can be extended in exceptional cases. Please contact us for this purpose.

What does the loan cost?

For all university events (seminars and lectures, conferences, lectures, ...), or events associated with the university, which can be attended free of charge, the loan is free of charge.

Who is liable in the event of damage or loss?

In the event of damage or loss of the devices caused negligently or intentionally, or in the event of theft, the university reserves the right to hold the borrowing person liable.

Can I use the device on a business trip/conference abroad?

Yes, but the borrower is liable for loss and for damage to the borrowed devices.

How short-term are loans possible?

You should submit the reservation request at least five working days before the planned use. By making a reservation early, you can ensure that the equipment you need will be available for you.

Can I also borrow equipment from you for private purposes?

No, because as a university we do not want to and are not allowed to compete with commercial providers. The loan is limited to university events and purposes. 

How do I transport the equipment?

You have to organise the transport of the devices yourself. Each of our headsets is packed in a transport case and can easily be transported on a bus or train. We can assist you in transporting several devices to your car on the Philosophikum I. Please note that we do not guarantee transport beyond this point.

Are batteries included?

The controllers of the VR headsets are equipped with batteries. No additional batteries are added beyond that. It is the responsibility of the person borrowing to ensure that the batteries are sufficiently charged.

What happens to my reserved loan units if I do not collect them?

You have the option of informing us by phone on the day of collection that you will not be collecting the equipment, with the request that you leave the borrowing devices lying around. If this does not happen, the reservation expires the following day.

How do I connect the headset to eduroam (WiFi)?

Each headset is already connected to eduroam. However, if the Wi-Fi connection is interrupted, the login details can be found on the device card that comes with each headset. 
  1. Press / on your right Touch Controller to pull up your universal menu.
  2. Hover over the clock on the left-hand side of the universal menu. When Quick settings appears, select it to open the Quick settings panel.
  3. Select WiFi and select Connect.
  4. Select eduroam and make the following settings or entries:

Domain: uni-giessen.de
Identity: username (a-identifier) plus @uni-giessen.de
Anonymous identity: eduroam@uni-giessen.de
Password: network password (can be found on the device card)
Confirm the entries with CONNECT.

To guarantee a timely processing, please make sure to send us your borrowing request at least one week before the borrowing period.
