WS: Martin Stark: Data Collection and Visualization of Networks in History and Culture

Recognizing the growing importance of digital research tools and methods in the humanities and social science, the workshop aims at exploring the potential of processing and visualizing network data for the broader field of the study of history and culture. The speaker, Dr. Martin Stark (Hamburg/Aachen), is an internationally recognized scholar in the field. He will host a two-part-series of events. On the first day, Dr. Stark will introduce his research and relevant concepts, methods and theories in the framework of a public lecture, followed by a discussion. On the second day, Dr. Stark will hold a hands-on workshop, which aims at providing registered participants the possibility to adapt the digital methods presented in the lecture via applying online and open source tools to their own research questions and projects. With Dr. Stark’s assistance, each participant is invited to bring his or her research data and work with his or her own findings.

The workshop, which is organized in collaboration by the GCSC, the Herder Institute and the ZMI, is open to all graduate students, researchers, and staff interested in digital history. No prior knowledge of digital history is required. Participants are expected to bring their own laptops. Material to process will be provided, but individual findings can be used, too.
