Importance of anti cytokine therapies
The history of relatively specific anti-inflammatory drugs comprises only a few major milestones:
- the synthesis of acetylic acid (aspirin) at the end
of the 19th century followed by the discovery of the prostglandine metabolism and the
subsequent development of many additional inhibitors of cyclooxygenases (nobel price 1982), - the discovery and application of glucocorticoids (nobel price 1950),
- the introduction of low dose methotrexate around 1985,
- the application of anti TNF antibodies to treat rheumatoid arthitis RA, the first studies
were published in 1994 (Lancet 1994 Oct 22;344(8930):1105-10).
