Founded in 1607, Justus Liebig University Giessen (JLU) is a research university rich in tradition. Inspired by curiosity about the unknown, we enable around 26,500 students and 5,700 employees to advance science for society. Join us in breaking new ground and writing success stories - your own and those of our university.

Support us from 01.01.2025 in one of two positions in part-time (65 %) as a

Ph.D. student (m/f/d)
in the field of bacterial pathogenesis and novel therapeutics

The two positions are part of an externally funded project and will be filled on a fixed-term basis in accordance with § 2 WissZeitVG and § 72 HessHG with the opportunity for own academic qualification at the Professorship in Translational Microbiology and Immunopathology of Infections, Centre for Medical Microbiology/Virology at the Faculty of Medicine. The salary is in accordance with the collective labour agreement of the State of Hessen (E 13 TV-H).

As long as the maximum permissible duration of a fixed-term contract is not exceeded, you will be employed for a period of 3 years.

Research area

The Winstel laboratory at the Justus-Liebig-University Giessen (Germany) focuses on the pathogenesis of medically important bacterial pathogens including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). We now seek two Ph.D. students who will have the opportunity to study host-microbe interaction and the design of novel therapeutic strategies within interdisciplinary projects that combine bacteriological, genetic, computational, and analytical approaches as well as disease-mimicking tissue culture systems and in vivo models.

Your tasks at a glance

  • Performance of innovative research projects with state-of-the-art technologies and established approaches, including genetic engineering, animal models of infectious disease, histology and microscopy, molecular cloning, as well as chromatography
  • Design of bioinformatics-based pipelines for exploration of novel mechanisms of host-pathogen interaction
  • Establishment and discovery of novel therapeutic intervention strategies to combat multidrug-resistant pathogens
  • Design and performance of microbial infection assays using various tissue culture model systems including organoids
  • Collection, processing and analysis of patient samples
  • Independent analysis of own experimental results along with the preparation of scientific talks and papers

The provision of academic services (including the processing of a research project financed by third party funds on a temporary basis) also serves the purpose of academic qualification.

Your qualifications and competences

  • Completed Master´s or equivalent university degree in biology, biochemistry, biomedicine, medicine, veterinary medicine, bioinformatics, data science, computational biology, or a related discipline
  • Strong background in biomedicine, microbiology, immunology, cell and molecular biology, as well as biochemistry
  • Experience in the safe handling of infectious agents and in vivo models is a plus
  • Familiarity and experience in machine learning, data science techniques, or computational biology is an advantage
  • Excellent communication skills in English (both spoken and written)
  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to work in a team as well as independently

Our offer to you
