Your study certificates for the first semester are available under https://iam.uni-giessen.de/. Certificates of study for the following semesters can be requested in the iam-portal as well. After your re-registration, you can request and print out your study certificates for the second, third, fourth, etc. semesters online using your HRZ ID (first letter "s" or "j"). These study certificates will be sent to your university email address as a PDF form if you request them under the following link: https://iam.uni-giessen.de/
(Username = HRZ username; Password = LDAP/net password).

After your account has been activated, you will receive your user ID and the corresponding password as well as a personal university email address online. Information on how to obtain your Student ID card will be sent to newly enrolled students via email. Please follow the instructions in the email. Once your Student ID card has been printed, it will be sent to you by post. If you live in a student hall of residence, please also enter your room number in the address field when registering and label your letterbox in good time. If you are still abroad at the start of the semester, you will not be able to receive a Student ID card for the time being. As soon as you have arrived in Germany and know your postal address in Germany, please inform JLU of your new address via email (international.admission@admin.uni-giessen.de). Please note, however, that not all students will receive such a card.

Yes, you must pay the full semester contribution even if you are not in Germany or Giessen. You can apply to the AStA for a refund for the winter semester 23/24 by 10 November 2023 at the latest. You can find more information about the refund and download the relevant applications here (currently only available in German!):

The AStA office is still closed, but staffed. Please make enquiries by phone and by email to buero@asta-giessen.de.

An exemption to the full semester contribution is the fully digital course of study "Sustainable Transition". Its semester fee is lower than the regular one. At the moment this amounts to 99.35€.

No, you can only get a refund of your semester ticket if:

• you have a proof of disability
• you are studying abroad as part of a study exchange (for at least 3 months)
• you are doing an internship outside of the validity of your semester ticket (for at least 3 months)
• you are taking a semester of leave (due to serious illness, pregnancy, caretaking work, etc.)
• you are registered at two universities at the same time
• you are a doctoral student living outside the validity of the semester ticket
• you have completed all credit points except for your final examination

No, if you are not currently in Germany, you do not need a German health insurance. You have to get a German health insurance once you are in Germany.
However, you need to get in contact with a German health insurance provider prior to your enrolment to obtain a digital M10 certificate that will be send directly to the university. Citizens of the European Union that possess a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) do not need an additional German health insurance during their stay in Germany. However, you do need to contact a German statutory health insurance for obtaining a digital M10 certificate to prove that you are exempted from statutory health insurance obligations.

After your registration at the "Meldebehörde" (city office) you should apply for a residence permit at the immigration office in the city where you are registered. If your visa is still valid, it is sufficient to submit the application approximately 8 weeks before it expires.

In order to apply you need to fill out the "Antrag auf Erteilung eines Aufenthaltstitels" and make an appointment at the foreigners office (Ausländerbehörde). On the day of your appointment please bring the following documents:

• passport and visa
• registration (Anmeldebestätigung)

Every bank offers different services for students. When opening an account, please remember to mention that you are a student and also bring the certificate of enrolment and the student ID with you to the account opening. You must always present the certificate to your bank in person or by email at the beginning of the semester in order to have a free account. When choosing a bank, also take note of the age restrictions for the student account. In Giessen, you can find the following banks and savings banks, amongst others: Deutsche Bank branch, Postbank, Sparkasse Gießen, Volksbank Mittelhessen eG.

Students have the option of taking a semester off for an important reason (e.g. serious illness, maternity leave, study-related stay abroad, etc.).

In this case, the semester of leave does not count as a semester of study, which means, however, that it is generally not possible to acquire credits and take examinations. It is possible to repeat failed examinations during the leave of absence. A leave of absence for a completed semester is not possible. The application for leave of absence must be filled in online.

Studierende haben die Möglichkeit, sich aus einem wichtigen Grund (z.B. schwere Erkrankung, Mutterschutz, studienbedingter Auslandsaufenthalt usw.) beurlauben zu lassen.

Die Urlaubssemester zählen dann nicht als Fachsemester, d.h. aber auch, dass der Erwerb von Leistungsnachweisen und das Ablegen von Prüfungen in der Regel nicht möglich ist. Eine Wiederholung nicht bestandener Prüfungen während der Beurlaubung ist möglich. Die Beurlaubung für ein abgeschlossenes Semester ist ausgeschlossen. Der Antrag auf Beurlaubung muss online ausgefüllt werden.

Currently, you must expect an average monthly cost of living of €1,000. The funding of your studies (personal funding, scholarships, etc.) has to be ensured before you start studying here. Students from non-EU countries will need an official statement that they have sufficient financial resources (e.g. a blocked account in Germany or a scholarship certificate of a public scholarship). You can live in a dormitory for a maximum of 10 semesters. In exceptional cases, you might be able to extend for another 6 months. This must be arranged with the administration of the dormitories.

Man darf höchstens 10 Semester im Studierendenwohnheim wohnen. In Ausnahmefällen kann man zusätzlich um 6 Monate verlängern. Dies muss mit der Wohnheimverwaltung abgesprochen werden.

There are a variety of institutions that provide funding for studying in Germany. The conditions for awarding scholarships vary from institution to institution. Before applying, you should therefore find out exactly what requirements the foundations and private initiatives place on scholarship holders. International students who do not come from the EU or the EEA are allowed to work 140 full days. This equals up to 20 hours per week.

There are a few opportunities to work as a student assistant or as a mentor or tutor within the university. These positions are advertised within the university via notices in the individual departments and institutes or in the JLU online job portal.

Stud.IP is JLU’s central information and communication platform for all seminars and courses. If Stud.IP is used by your lecturers, you have to register for courses on this platform. In contrast to FlexNow, Stud.IP offers a couple of features accompanying you throughout the semester.

Stud.IP offers the possibility to download files, to hand in written assignments, to download reading assignments, to read news (such as changes of lecture rooms, etc.), to work with others on a project using Stud.IP’s Wiki, or to discuss lecture topics in the forums. There are even further interesting features, such as a virtual billboard for advertisements, pinboards, surveys, and even a platform to register for consultation hours. Departmental student bodies also use Stud.IP for the distribution and exchange of information.

Stud.IP ist neben ILIAS eine der zentralen Informations- und Kommunikationsplattform zur Unterstützung von Lehrveranstaltungen. Der Name (Studienbegleitender Internetsupport von Präsenzlehre) ist dabei Programm: Stud.IP begleitet Lehrende und Studierende durch das Semester in Studium und Lehre.

Über Stud.IP werden u.a. Dateien zum Herunterladen angeboten, Hausarbeiten eingesammelt, der elektronische Semesterapparat des Bibliotheksystems angebunden und Neuigkeiten zu Lehrveranstaltungen (Raumänderung etc.) bekannt gegeben. Darüber hinaus gibt es weitere interessante Features wie z. B. ein virtuelles Schwarzes Brett für Kleinanzeigen, eine Pinnwand, Umfragen oder eine Sprechstundenanmeldung.

On the "My Courses" page you will find all the courses in which you are already registered. You can find other courses via the event search (large magnifying glass symbol). It is best to enter a keyword from the title of the event or the last name of the teacher and make sure that the correct semester is selected!

Auf der Seite „Meine Veranstaltungen“ finden Sie alle Kurse, in denen Sie bereits eingetragen sind. Andere Kurse können Sie über die Veranstaltungssuche (großes Lupen-Symbol) finden. Geben Sie am besten ein Schlagwort aus dem Titel der Veranstaltung oder den Nachnamen der Lehrperson ein und achten Sie darauf, dass das richtige Semester ausgewählt ist!

In most cases, this is due to the lecturers and the designated period of time in which students should register. Usually, you will still be able to register in the first week of the semester or as soon as your lecturers activate the registration. The faculty 09 is an exception, as they work with fixed registration periods. If you have not been able to access your Stud.IP courses after the first week of the semester has passed, please contact your lecturer.

ILIAS is one of the two central learning platforms at JLU. In addition to functions that Stud.IP also covers (see question on Stud.IP), ILIAS also offers the possibility of creating interactive learning units, checking your knowledge via self-testing or attending preliminary courses online. There is an interface between Stud.IP and ILIAS, so ILIAS can be accessed via Stud.IP. ILIAS is used in courses where the e-learning proportion is high. To log in, you need your HRZ student identifier (in German: s/j-Kennung) and the LDAP/network password.

FlexNow is the centralized examination management system of JLU. This service is used to manage your examinations as well as your course participation. If you want to register for courses or modules, you can do so on the FlexNow website. After each registration or cancelation a confirmation record is sent to your university email address. Additionally you can also check your examination results online after their publication. You may also create an online certificate list (Leistungsübersicht) for many bachelor and master programs. Certificate lists for all other programmes can be requested of the examination office responsible for your course of studies. Information on setting up FlexNow can be found here.
