The Liebig-College invites every year visiting research professor, who give top-caliber lectures and seminars complementary to the themes of the JLU research groups. In 2019 our visiting research professors will be:

Professor William Karney received his PhD in organic chemistry from UCLA working with Orville Chapman and later did postdoctoral work with Wes Borden at the University of Washington. He joined the faculty at the University of San Francisco in 1997. His teaching interests cover organic chemistry and environmental chemistry. His research, performed in collaboration with Prof. Claire Castro, involves the use of computational chemistry to understand the structures, energetics, and properties of organic compounds and the mechanisms of organic reactions. Research projects include the investigation of annulenes with Möbius topology, the elucidation of mechanisms for dynamic processes in annulenes, high-temperature rearrangements of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and the study of reactive intermediates such as nitrenes and diradicals. Most recently the group is focused on the contribution of heavy-atom tunneling to the reactions of annulenes. Professor Karney and his wife are our guests from March till June 2019. |

Derek A. Pratt is Professor of Chemistry and Biomolecular Science at the University of Ottawa (Canada). The focus of his program is the mechanisms and products of free radical reactions, and in particular, lipid (hydrocarbon) autoxidation and its inhibition by antioxidants. Professor Pratt will be our Liebig-Lecturer from 3rd - 4th June. |
