Hypoxic Pulmonary Vasoconstriction and Oxygen Sensing

Hypoxic Pulmonary Vasoconstriction (HPV) is an essential mechanism of the lung to adapt pulmonary perfusion to alveolar ventilation and avoid life-threatening hypoxemia such as that found e.g. in acute respiratory distress syndrome.

Mitochondria play a major role as oxygen sensors in acute hypoxia triggering HPV.

We identified major sensing and signalling mechanisms underlying HPV.

Our further research focusses on primary mitochondrial oxygen sensing mechanisms and subsequent downstream redox signalling.
