1. Looking for a supervisor
Faculty 03 is made up of seven institutes, which in turn are made up of very different professorships. You can find an overview of our wide range of research opportunities in Educational Science, Art Education, Political Science and Sociology HERE.
2. An important decision: Monograph or cumulative dissertation
For your doctorate, you can write a complete work in the form of a monograph. You can also write a synopsis that summarises the development and main results of the scientific contribution of your publications (published or accepted after review). You can find the conditions for the latter, the so-called cumulative thesis, HERE. If you were accepted as a doctoral candidate before 24/05/2023, the information provided to you at that time applies.
3. Binational doctoral procedure (cotutelle procedure)
If you collaborate with or carry out research at an international university in your doctorate programme, you have the opportunity to participate in a cotutelle programme. You can find further information on this HERE
4. Acceptance as a doctoral candidate
In order to be officially admitted as a doctoral candidate in Faculty 03, submit the documents required by the Doctoral Examination Regulations (see paragraph 8) to the Examination Office.
The application for acceptance as a doctoral candidate is to be submitted HERE and the complete application documents and a synopsis are to be submitted in due time and in paper form to the Examination Office. 6. Opening of the examination procedure
Upon completion of your thesis – whether it is a monograph or a cumulative work – the following documents are to be submitted to the Doctoral Committee:
(1) Application to open the examination procedure HERE
(2) a) 3 printed copies of the thesis, each with an additional data carrier (labelled and glued in, containing all text documents and other data contained in the written version).
b) 4 printed copies when submitting a cumulative thesis, if submitted contributions have been published with a reviewer and further assessment is required.
(3) In addition, the thesis is to be sent as a PDF file to the Examination Office.
7. What happens now?
After you have submitted all of the documents complete, the Doctoral Committee has approved the opening of your procedure and confirmed the composition of the Examination Committee, your thesis will enter the assessment phase. After the assessments have been received, the thesis and the assessments will be on display in the faculty (for 2 weeks in periods when there are lectures or 4 weeks in periods when there are no lectures. You will receive the assessments - as well as possible supplementary assessments - after the display period has ended in order to prepare for the thesis defence. The thesis defence, in which you will present and defend your research results to the university public, can take place at the earliest 10 days after the end of the display period in order to ensure that the invitation to the thesis defence can be sent in due time.
8. After the disputation
You will receive a certificate confirming that you have completed the examination procedure. The doctoral certificate will be issued to you as soon as it has been published as required by the Doctoral Examination Regulations. The title of Doctor may only be used after the doctoral certificate has been issued. Furthermore, if you publish at publisher level, you must send 4 copies to the university library and 2 copies to the Examination Office.
