GGS Summer Event 2024

This year's GGS summer event will be launched on June 19, 2024, starting at 6 p.m. with welcoming remarks by the President of the JLU, Professor Dr Katharina Lorenz and the Executive Director of the GGS Professor Dr Peter Tillmann.

At this year's summer event, the GGS will once again award the Dr Herbert Stolzenberg Award for Research in the Social Sciences, Economics and Law to young researchers at the GGS for outstanding academic achievements.

Also, there will be a guest lecture again. This year we are pleased to welcome Albrecht von Lucke for his lecture.

After a short discussion in the plenary, the participants may continue this at a festive standing reception with food and drinks. In case of good weather, this will take place in the foyer of the auditorium as well as at the forecourt of the auditorium. The guest speaker

Albrecht von Lucke

Albrecht von Lucke

Our guest speaker this year will be Albrecht von Lucke, who will give a lecture analysing the current state of the EU with the title: Das Ende unserer Illusionen: Europa und das Schicksalsjahr 2024.

Abstract: After the fall of the Berlin Wall, the European Union appeared to many as a post-national showcase project and the promise of a peaceful future in freedom and prosperity. In 2004, Jeremy Riffkin was representative of many in outlining his "European Dream" as "the vision of a quiet superpower".

Today, all this is proving to be an illusion - the EU is under attack from within and without. The right-wing extremists will triumph in the European elections. At the same time, Donald Trump's election victory threatens the end of the transatlantic partnership and the nuclear defence shield against a highly expansionist Russia. Democratic Europe is thus proving to be "conditionally ready for defence" at best.

How did Europe end up in this fatal situation? How did we get it so wrong? And what should we do now?

Short biography of the author:

Albrecht von Lucke's publications include: "68 oder neues Biedermeier: Der Kampf um die Deutungsmacht" (2008), "Die gefährdete Republik: Von Bonn nach Berlin. 1949-1989-2009" (2009) and "Die schwarze Republik und das Versagen der deutschen Linken" (2015).

In 2014, von Lucke was honoured with the "Lessing-Förderpreis für Kritik" and in 2018 with the Otto Brenner "Special" Prize.
