Postdoc Lunch
Postdoc in Life Science (PiLS) - Lunch
Being a postdoc means to have a lot of challenges and responsibilities. To be successful in the postdoc phase of your life you need support and understanding of your peers. During GGL PiLS Lunch you are offered an opportunity to reflect on and discuss individual challenges in your daily routine, improve individual strategies for career progress, and get memorable experience in the course of talks with people, who are in the same boat with you.
Three major goals of our postdoc lunch are: to exchange information as well as to foster new collaborations; to get to know each other better; and to have fun after all.
Networking and exchange are vital for the success of postdocs. GGL offers interested postdocs the opportunity to get together for personal development, supported by a professional coach. The meetings on a regular basis are in accordance with your needs and interests. The working language of the postdoc lunch is English or German, depending on the wishes of the group.
Gathering with peers as well as giving feedback is a win-win situation for everyone. Lunch is an excellent opportunity to develop soft skills in an informal situation. Only while communicating with others there appears a chance to train hugely important communication and team-building skills. Creating shared memories and experiences are the key factors in team building, the must-have skills in the contemporary society. Communication with peers helps to get support in difficult situations, to see that you are not alone facing challenges in life. All that helps to feel support and to relieve stress.
Relaxation is an important part of every postdoc’s life. All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy, as the proverb goes. Some time off from research is a good breath of fresh air. Having fun helps to get inspiration, become more productive, and get impulses for creativity.
To cut a long story short, the global goal of our meetings is fostering the feeling of belonging in our shared life sciences community.

The general topics may focus around Career Orientation (you can also bring your own topics):
Ca. 5% of all doctoral candidates have a chance to get a call for a professorship position. As a Postdoc your chance already increased to ca. 25%. However, 74% of the postdocs strive for a permanent position at the University. Where do all the other postdocs find a new position? How do you go about changing lanes for a career outside of academia? Is it possible to increase your chances for a professorship position? These and other questions may be raised (and answered) during our PiLS Lunch.
