Composition of the Study Programme

Composition of degree programme (outline)

The programme consists of several parallel strands:

  • the four education and social sciences (sociology, political science, psychology and pedagogy),
  • teaching and learning at primary school,
  • aesthetic and artistic development and physical education,
  • three teaching subjects (German and mathematics are obligatory),
  • and school-based study, in the form of school placements undertaken in conjunction with preparatory and retrospective seminars.

The Hessian law governing teaching qualifications requires every education student to complete an orientation placement as well as a work placement in a business. More on this...

Education and social sciences

Teachers are not only there to impart knowledge but also have an important role in children's social development. In order to do this role justice, they must be able to understand and evaluate the structures and processes at play in school and in society as well as in a class and within the development of an individual pupil.

To this end, the study of education and social sciences in this degree programme covers the following areas:

  • locations of education and development (e.g. family upbringing, school upbringing);
  • developmental psychology (e.g. different age groups, the development of thought);
  • the social coexistence of pupils, parents and teachers;
  • and the basics of democracy, among others.

Teaching and learning at primary school

This strand of the degree programme deals with topics specific to primary school. Courses are held as part of education studies and cover topics in primary-school teaching which have a wider significance than those dealt with in students' study of their particular teaching subjects.

More information on the contents of this part of the programme can be found in the module plans and descriptions.
