Teaching Degree Programmes
The modularized teaching degree programmes end with the first state examination in Hesse. The next step is the period of work as a trainee teacher (Referendariat). The Referendariat ends with the second state examination.

- Teaching Qualification for Primary Education (Teaching Degree)
- Taught in German. All language subjects are also taught in the respective language; almost all English courses are taught in English. The degree programme in primary education, or 'L1' as it is known, prepares students to teach Years 1-4 at German Grundschulen. Graduates get a teaching certificate for Years 1-6 in their particular teaching subjects.
- Teaching Qualification for Primary Education with the Subject "Islamic Religion" (Teaching Degree)
- Taught in German. The course of studies Teaching Qualification for Primary Eduaction with the subject "Islamic Religion” / Ethics with the focus "Islam" trains prospective teachers for teaching at primary schools (classes 1-4); in the subjects the qualification for teaching classes 1-6 can be acquired.
- Teaching Qualification for Primary Education with the Subject "Ethics" (Teaching Degree)
- Taught in German. The course of studies Teaching Qualification for Primary Eduaction with the subject "Ethics" trains prospective teachers for teaching at primary schools (classes 1-4); in the subjects the qualification for teaching classes 1-6 can be acquired.
- Teaching Qualification for Lower - Secondary Education (Teaching Degree)
- Taught in German. All language subjects are also taught in the respective language; almost all English courses are taught in English. The degree programme in lower-secondary education, or 'L2' as it is known, prepares students to teach Years 5-10 at German Hauptschulen and Realschulen but also the same level at grammar schools (Gymnasien).
- Teaching Qualification for Grammar Schools (Teaching Degree)
- Taught in German. All language subjects are also taught in the respective language; almost all English courses are taught in English. The course of studies for the Lehramt L3 (the teaching qualification for grammar schools) prepares students for teaching secondary school years 5-13 in grammar schools and also for middle schools and secondary modern schools as well as for teaching general education classes in vocational schools.
- Special-Needs Education (Teaching Degree)
- Taught in German. All language subjects are also taught in the respective language; almost all English courses are taught in English. The degree programme in special-needs education, or 'L5' as it is known, prepares students for teaching at German special-needs schools as well as at primary schools and, in their chosen teaching subject, at lower-secondary schools.
- Vocational Education and Training (Teaching Degree)
- Taught in German. Giessen University offers a range of Bachelor's and Master's degrees, among them the BA and MA which qualify graduates to teach at vocational schools. All language subjects are also taught in the respective language; almost all English courses are taught in English.
In Germany, teacher-training policy falls within the remit of the federal states' own education authorities.
