Entrance requirements

The entry prerequisite for a Master’s degree course is a Bachelor’s degree with a relevant subject profile.
Relevant Bachelor degree courses of a German university are:

  • Agricultural Sciences
  • Agricultural Biology
  • Agricultural Economy
  • Agriculture

In the context of the application and admission process the Examination Board may recognise other final degrees as equivalent on a case-to-case basis.

Application and admission
  • The intake capacity of this degree programme is not limited internally by the university.
  • The general application deadlines of JLU Gießen end on July 15 for the winter semester and on January 15th for the summer semester.

Possible in the winter and in the summer semester. Suggested start of studies is the winter semester.

Content
The emphasis in the study of Farm Animal Science lies on the foundation of the subject and the structures which support the production of valuable foodstuffs at a national and international level.  Connected to this are questions about nutrition, breeding, production technology, preventive protection against diseases – and also the quality of the products produced.

In this course teaching and research is in the areas of:
  • Animal Nutrition and  Nutrition Physiology
  • Animal Breeding and Pet Genetics
  • Animal Husbandry und Biology of Husbandry

Composition of degree programme
The course of studies is composed of 20 modules:
  • 8 core modules (mandatory)
  • 8 specialisation modules (non-mandatory)
  • a written Master thesis (equivalent to 4 modules)
Half the taught modules are mandatory (core modules), the other half can be chosen from all the classes taught in the faculty or from classes conducted by other departments of the JLU Giessen (specialisation module).
Specialisation is possible through the choice of the non-mandatory modules. The course has been successfully completed when all the modules have been passed.

  • Behavior and Housing of Farm Animals
  • Laboratory Course Nutrition Physiology of Animals
  • Agricultural Technology

  • Special Nutrition Physiology
  • Physiology of Performance
