Overview

This Master's programme enables students to solve beverage technology problems in industrial practice. Beverage technologists provide impulses in the development of new plants and machines, are in charge of planning production plants and investments. This distinguishes them from Bachelor graduates. They are the motors of product and process development and develop methods and criteria for the evaluation of products and processes, among other things. Due to the sensitivity of special beverage ingredients to external factors, in-depth knowledge of the occurrence, effect, analytics and quality control of value-giving ingredients is taught in addition to technical and technological requirements. Graduates are qualified to find employment in control and monitoring authorities or to take over departmental management in corresponding specialist departments of ministries. They also have the competence to work scientifically and to do a doctorate in the analytical and process engineering field. Economic skills are taught in the profile modules.

Students spend one semester each at Justus Liebig University Giessen (JLU) and Hochschule Geisenheim University (HS Geisenheim), where they acquire the necessary course-specific basic knowledge in the core modules. Building on this, they can design their studies individually and flexibly according to their goals and wishes through the freely selectable profile modules at both locations.

Composition of the study programme

The study programme is divided into two sections. The first section is completed at Justus Liebig University Giessen (JLU), the second at Geisenheim University.

It is possible to start the study programme in the winter and summer semester. Students can choose whether they start their studies at JLU or HS Geisenheim. It is recommended to start in the winter semester and first take the core modules provided at the respective location.The degree programme is composed of 20 modules:

  • 8 core (compulsory) modules
  • 8 profile (elective) modules
  • a written Master's thesis (equivalent to 4 modules).

Half of the course modules are compulsory (core modules), the other half can be selected from the entire range of courses offered by faculty 09 of JLU and by other departments of the JLU as well as HS Geisenheim, department of oenology and winegrowing (profile modules). It does not matter how many profile modules are taken at JLU and how many at HS Geisenheim. It is also possible, for example, to complete the entire number of profile modules at one of the two locations. 
One semester (the 2nd semester at the start of the winter semester) serves as a mobility window and consists entirely of profile modules. Students can choose whether they would like to study this semester in Geisenheim, Giessen or abroad.
Specialization is possible through the choice of profile modules. The course is successfully completed when all modules have been passed.

  •  Applied Statistics
  •  Special Biochemistry
  •  Practical Course in Nutritional Physiology
The core modules (compulsory modules) at HS Geisenheim are:

  • Microbiology of Beverages
  • Plant Design and Process Technology
  • Food Safety
  • Food Technology and Process Engineering of Plant Products

Application: Admission requirements

Commencement of studies

Summer semester and winter semester
It is strongly recommended that students begin their studies in the winter semester. Please contact the Student Coordinator or the Student Advisory Office for more advice.

Admission requirements

The admission to this study programme requires a relevant Bachelor's degree. The following programmes are currently considered to be relevant

  • Beverage Technology
  • Brewing
  • Viticulture and Oenology

The examination board may recognise other degrees as equivalent within the scope of the application and admission procedure after a case-by-case examination. In addition to mathematical-scientific prerequisites, a sound knowledge of the following areas is required:   

  • Microbiology
  • Fruit and vegetable juices
  • Soft drinks
  • Filling and packaging technology
  • Process engineering
  • Alcoholic Beverages
  • Quality Management

Application/enrollment

  • The study program is not subject to admission restrictions.
  • The enrollment period for the winter semester begins in early June and for the summer semester in early December.
  • The end of the enrollment period is determined each year, please check the application portal during the enrollment period.

Occupational fields

The food industry is one of the largest employers in Germany. The beverage sector plays a insignificant role in this and employs thousands of people in breweries, mineral water companies, fruit juice companies, distilleries and wineries. Graduates of the Master's degree program in Beverage Technology can use their qualifications to take up management positions in all areas of the beverage industry, e.g. as laboratory managers, quality and product managers, production managers or technical managers.


Typical areas of responsibility are:

  • Product development
  • process optimization
  • quality control
  • Food safety
  • Technical consulting
  • Research and development

Graduates are also qualified to work in control and monitoring authorities or to take over the management of units in the relevant specialist departments of ministries. They also have the skills to work scientifically in the field of analytics and process engineering and to complete a doctorate.

Doctorate

After successfully completing a Master's degree, doctoral studies are possible.
