JLU Early Career Researcher Grant
- Funding goal
- The Justus Liebig University (JLU) Early Career Researcher Grant supports independent and career-effective research projects of early career researchers at JLU, which should result in a scientific publication or a corresponding published research output in the field of science communication or open science. The planned research projects should be convincing in terms of their scientific quality and should effectively promote the individual scientific career of the applicant. Ideally, the project output will contribute to an improvement of the applicant’s qualifications relevant to assessments in e.g. future third-party funding applications within a reasonable amount of time.

Early career researchers with a PhD (i.e. postdoctoral researchers on R2-R3 level) from all departments and scientific centres of JLU are eligible. Additionally, postdocs must be employed on state funded positions or in the context of an ongoing third-party funded project. Scholarship holders and fellows affiliated with JLU are also eligible to apply if the duration of the scholarship/fellowship covers the funding period of the research grant. The applicant's position or sponsoring must be secured for the duration of the Early Career Researcher Grant, which is a maximum of 6 months from 1 June 2023 to 30 November 2023.
At the time of application, the PhD should not have been completed more than 8 years ago; there is no upper age limit for applicants. Periods of parental or care leave will be taken into account[1]. Postdocs and fellows from the humanities, cultural and social sciences are particularly encouraged to apply.
[1] Parental leave for children born in the 8 years prior to application will be credited according to the Marie Curie guidelines for postdoctoral researchers (cp, Work Programme, p. 90, note 89).

What is funded?
Funding is provided for research projects that, due to their scientific quality, clearly defined objectives and work programme, promptly lead to one of the following results: scientific publication or published research output in the field of science communication or open science. Eligible activities within these projects are for example:
- Research visits, networking meetings
- Data collection, execution of experiments and studies (along validated subject-specific standards as well as research data management standards)
- Hiring of research assistants to support research, data collection, data processing, etc.
- Individual activities of science communication or in the field of Open Science within the proposed project and/or for proposed project.
What’s not funded?
- Personnel costs for funding the PI’s position or transitional funding
- Infrastructure investments, e.g. basic laboratory equipment and research equipment
- Consumables and working materials, which are funded through basic funding (e.g., laptops, office supplies, books, etc.)
- Funding scope
- The maximum available funding amount is 5,000€ for material and personnel resources for the funding period 1 June 2023 to 30 November 2023 (6 months).

An application for funding through the Early Career Researcher Grant should be addressed to the President of Justus Liebig University Giessen and submitted to the Science Support team at the Research Staff Division by 28 February 2023. The application consists of the following parts:
- Project description: details of the planned research project with clear objectives, a generally understandable description of the work program for the period of support, a statement on career effectiveness, a financial plan.
- Attachments: Curriculum vitae in tabular form, project-and topic related list of publications, statement by the applicant on compliance with good scientific practice, statement by the superior professorship/director of institute with a confirmation that the infrastructure of the professorship/institute can be used to carry out the planned work.

- Selection process
- The decision on funding by the Early Career Researcher Grant is made by the Executive Board. The evaluation criteria are the scientific quality and the career impact of the project, and the qualification of the applicant, taking into account previous research achievements in accordance with the respective career phase. In exceptional cases, an expert opinion from an independent expert may be considered.
- Funding principles
- The applicant will be informed in writing about the decision of the Executive Board. In case of a positive outcome of the application, the project including all project related activities will take place between 1 June 2023 and 30 November 2023. At the end of the project, a final report including proof of use of funds must be made available within 6 weeks. As soon as possible and after consultation with the Science Support team, the publication or published research output should be made available to the Science Support team for presentation on the website. Should project management issues arise and require clarification, the PIs are kindly asked to actively contact the Science Support team in due time.
