Scientists with permanent responsibilities

Scientists with permanent responsibilities complete scientific tasks continuously over a long period of time and thus embody the institutional memory of science at JLU.

They are experts in their field and act as important contacts for students and new members of the respective research or working group. In addition, scientists with permanent responsibilities perform important coordination tasks in the departments and guarantee continuity within the working group in case of personnel changes.

They therefore ensure that experience gained over many years is maintained and contribute indispensably to successful research. Ideally, working as a permanent employee gives these researchers a high degree of independence and autonomy, which they use successfully in committee and commission work for the benefit of the employees and JLU as a whole.

Basically, two areas can be distinguished in which permanent academic tasks arise:

Permanent tasks in the field of activity "Research, research infrastructure and research transfer"

These include:

  • the scientific supervision of large-scale equipment, extensive experimental facilities and laboratories as well as the instruction and supervision of laboratory and equipment users
  • the coordination of interdisciplinary research priorities and networks,
  • research, including publishing and acquiring third-party funding as well as the (co-)supervision of doctoral candidates, students and project staff.

Permanent tasks in the "Teaching" field of activity

These include:

  • teaching specialized knowledge and instruction in the application of scientific methods, including taking/conducting exams,
  • advising students on their studies and careers after graduation,
  • developing new teaching concepts and coordinating and supervising courses.

These diverse permanent tasks result in different fields of activity for academics: employees with a focus on university teaching are employed as teachers for special tasks (LfbA) and (senior) academic advisors in the university service. Furthermore, academics with permanent responsibilities are employed as research assistants, academic (senior) advisors or academic directors.

Academics with permanent employment have generally completed the doctoral and sometimes also the postdoctoral phase. In addition to a professorship for life, a permanent employment is an important career goal in the academic field, as it offers the opportunity to work and research independently in a permanent position and is by no means the end of personal development opportunities. As a permanent employment it offers an ideal framework in which employees can strategically develop into experts in their field (specialisation in teaching, research, coordination) in the long term.

As a scientist with a permanent employment you are also welcome to take advantage of our offers for your job-specific further training or for a broader qualification for other internal JLU positions with new specialisations or in a new area (e.g. science management or university administration).

The PCMO will support you in this process, for example with personnel development programmes and counselling.
