First Vice President
Prof. Dr. Alexander Goesmann has been at the helm of JLU as Vice President for Teaching since 24 April 2024. He is primarily responsible for studies and teaching.
Prof. Goesmann, born in 1974, has been Professor of Systems Biology at JLU since 2013, specialising in genomics, proteomics and transcriptomics. He studied computer science in Bielefeld. Until his appointment to Giessen, he headed the Bioinformatics Resource Facility at the Centre for Biotechnology (CeBiTec) at Bielefeld University. In 2007, he also took over an independent junior research group for computational genomics. From 2021 to 2024, he was already a member of the JLU Executive Board as Vice President for Scientific Infrastructure.
In his research, Prof Goesmann deals with the management and analysis of huge amounts of data produced when sequencing DNA in genome projects. The focus is on new software solutions for automated and rapid data analysis as well as systematic data storage. The establishment of the German Network for Bioinformatics Infrastructure (de.NBI), in which Goesmann played a key role, began in 2015. Since then, JLU has been one of six locations in Germany where a future-orientated computer infrastructure has been established.
