Collection Day Mainz 2018 - Documentation now online!

The documentation includes abstracts of the presentations, reports from the workshops, the posters of the poster slam, and the conference report.

For the 10th time, the German-wide Collection Conference took place in fall 2018, which alternating universities organize annually in cooperation with the Society for University Collections and through funding from the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). The host was the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. Among the approximately 150 participants were mainly collection managers of university collections, representatives of central coordination offices and curatorial departments, and specimen researchers at universities and museums from Germany and abroad. The Collection Days are important forums not only for the exchange of ideas on teaching and research with specimens in theory and practice, but also on practical questions of collection work and on the perspective development of university collections.

The conference focused on the elementary property of university collections as nodes of extensive networks of relationships. The goal was to explore the potential that this can offer for collaborations with internal and external partners, on a regional, national and international level. What is the motivation, objective, and significance of activating networks around the specimens? How does concrete cooperation with different partners affect specimen-related knowledge processes, how does it affect the ongoing development of collections, collection activities, and the self-image of one's own field of work? What new perspectives on the artifacts arise? These were central questions that permeated the dense program of panel discussions, lectures, workshops, poster presentations, and guided tours of the collections on site.

The documentation from Mainz Collection Day includes abstracts of the talks, reports from the workshops, posters of the poster slam, and the conference report. The volume is now available on the publication server of the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz:
