Your Children: Day Care and School
Your children have many options for social contacts in Giessen and you can offer them smooth daily routines. We are happy to help you with finding the right day-care facility or school.
It is best to organise day-care and school for your children before you come to Germany. Please contact us early.
Children up to 3 Years
Depending on the respective facility (day nanny or nursery) it is possible to find day-care for children who are only three months old. Day nannies often care for up to 5 children in their own house. Both nurseries and day nannies have to be paid for by the parents. It is possible to get support by the youth welfare service depending on the income.
Children Aged 3 - 6
You can choose between kindergartens run by the church, by the state, or independent nursery schools. Registration takes place at the respective kindergarten. Nursery schools have to be paid for, the sum ususally depends on your income.
Justus Liebig University Giessen also offers events and day care for children, please have a look at the following links to find out more:

Children aged 6 - 18
Children have to go to school when they have reached the age of 6 years. You have to register your children with a school of your choice. State-run schools are free of charge.
The first four years are spent in primary school, you will then have the choice between three different types of school: Hauptschule (secondary modern school), Realschule (junior high school) and Gymnasium (grammar school leading to the Abitur, the German university entrance qualification).
There are many schools in Giessen to choose from, some are all-day schools.
