The Universidad de los Andes (Uniandes) is a private research university located in Colombia’s capital Bogotá. It is one of the most renowned universities in South America and is academically composed of twelve faculties and centres encompassing the fields of medicine, law, economics and social sciences, as well as the natural sciences and the humanities. Founded in 1948 as the first non-sectarian university in Colombia, Uniandes promotes pluralism, dialogue and tolerance. The university has about 19,000 students and is located directly at the foot of the Andes.
Incidentally, the university mascot is a goat named Seneca. In the 1960s, the goat chose the university as its home and received a warm welcome by students and lecturers. When the goat died in 1966, the university was not allowed to replace it. However, it has since remained its symbol.

Partnership with JLU
JLU and Universidad de los Andes (Uniandes) have collaborated for more than 50 years to establish an institutional partnership that has developed into an exceptional strategic bond. Together with other German and Colombian universities, JLU and Uniandes have initiated two centres of excellence, which have attracted international attention. The scientific and academic consortium Corporation Center of Excellence in Marine Science (CEMarin) trains PhDs in marine sciences and carries out modern marine research on the Caribbean and Pacific coasts of Colombia. The German-Colombian Peace Institute Instituto Colombo-Alemán para la Paz (CAPAZ) promotes the exchange of knowledge and experience in peace work issues by building networks between universities, research centres, civil society organisations and government institutions. The "SDGnexus Network" in development and environmental research is an additional academic pillar of the cooperation, and through joint "SDG partnerships", JLU and Uniandes promote cooperation in areas related to the Sustainable Development Goals. Additionally, there are further cooperation projects in the areas of law and economics as well as linguistic and cultural studies.
