Physical chemistry of solids - solid state ionics and electrochemistry
The research interests cover the kinetics of reactions taking place at phase boundaries, especially the reduction/oxidation of oxygen at metal/solid electrolyte interfaces (e. g. Pt/YSZ), but also the interphase (SEI) formation in lithium ion batteries. Focal to these studies and to the understanding of the underlying reaction mechanisms is always the combination of electrochemical measurements with methods of surface characterization like XPS and SIMS. Recently, the interests were extended to the water electrolysis at manganese catalysts. Additionally, Dr. Luerßen is the x-ray diffraction operator of the Janek group including equipment for powder and thin film characterization. Finally, the preparation of scientific figures/pictures is a field of interest.
