Interdisciplinary Center for Animal Welfare and 3R

Animal welfare concerns us all!
Animal welfare concerns us all! The Giessen 3R Center “ICAR3R” was founded in October 2017 as an interdisciplinary research center at the intersection of Faculty 10 (Veterinary Medicine) and Faculty 11 (Medicine) and is therefore considered a pioneer among national 3R centers. It aims to sustainably implement the 3R concept (replace, reduce, refine) developed by Russell and Burch and to pursue Russell and Burch's highest goal, namely avoiding of sentient beings in research. In 2022, the core competencies of the 3R working area were expanded to include the animal welfare working area. Existing collaborations were utilized to take a more holistic view of the human-animal relationship field. This allows for the scientific examination of human-animal relationships in the context of animal welfare, animal well-being, and animal rights, and permits the integration of new (inter-)disciplinary perspectives. From then on, the center has been operating as the Interdisciplinary Center for Animal Welfare Research and 3Rs – ICAR3R (Interdisziplinäres Zentrum für Tierschutz und 3R). The overarching goal of the center is to conduct both theoretical and application-oriented research and teaching in the fields of the 3Rs and animal welfare in an inter- and transdisciplinary manner, and to communicate this scientifically to the broader society. The disciplines of Veterinary Medicine, Medicine, Agricultural Sciences, Biology, Sociology, Arts, Philosophy, and Law based at the Justus Liebig University Giessen collaborate on relevant animal welfare and 3R issues under the umbrella of ICAR3R, thereby opening up further collaborations at national and international levels. True to the motto - "Together we are better," a unique research infrastructure and a consulting service for science, politics, and social organizations and actors are being created. In publicly controversial discussions, the center acts as a reliable contact. The center is distinguished by an actively practiced interdisciplinary collaboration, which is unique in this form across Germany.
