March 17, 2020: Teaching in case of a pandemic (as of March 25th, 2020)

The university asks all teachers of the JLU to prepare themselves for a Start of Lectures from April 20th, 2020 to start a semester without classroom attendance and to use the time until then for appropriate preparations. As a first step, please plan at least the first four to six weeks of your courses alternatively, for example with the help of e-learning parts. The Vice President for Studies and Teaching, Prof. Dr. Verena Dolle has set up the "Teaching in the Summer Semester 2020" AG, which mainly supports the dean's offices as well as lecturers in this task in coordination and legal issues.

The team of experts for Digital Teaching is urgently looking for lecturers who have experience with digital teaching opportunities for a mentoring program. Please contact the parties via e-mail.

There will be a recommendation from the HRZ on alternatives to Adobe Connect from the DFN. More information can be found here at short notice.

In response to the current development by Covid-19, all of the JLU's e-learning parties (HRZ, HDK, ZfbK, EmE, DigLL, Teaching 4.0) form the "Team of Experts for Digital Teaching" together. If you have any questions about low-contact teaching formats in preparation for the upcoming summer semester, you can contact the parties in advance by e-mail (hochschuldidaktik@zfbk.uni-giessen.de). Until April 1st, 2020, a needs-based advisory service will be developed and supplemented by telephone or online advice options. In addition to that, an e-mentoring program will be launched, for which lecturers with e-learning experience who would like to support colleagues can already register at the above mentioned e-mail address.

Dear university lecturers, considering COVID-19, we, at the Justus-Liebig-University in Gießen would like to provide help and advice for safe and digital teaching. In the coming days we will provide information about digital tools and opportunities to shape the coming semester.
For members of the JLU, the University Computing Center (HRZ) has set up a page that provides information and tools to carry out courses in the digital area. The following link https://ilias.uni-giessen.de/ilias/goto.php?target=cat_104833&client_id=JLUG takes you to the university's ILIAS platform. The page is constantly updated and bundles the expertise of all contact persons at the JLU in the field of digital university teaching.
The Media and E-Learning Group (HRZ) and University Didactics (ZfbK) support you in the implementation of digitally supported teaching.

March 25, 2020: QSL funds (emergency fund) for digital teaching in the summer semester 2020
Information about the (informal) application process for QSL funds from the "disposition fund for teaching" for emergency measures by the Vice President for Learning and Teaching in connection in the amount of € 40,000. In this application round (until April 1st, 2020) we accept projects up to € 4,000.
For the course planning of the summer semester 2020, funds are available for digital teaching formats from the teaching fund of the Vice President to improve the quality of the study conditions and teaching (QSL funds). The earmarking of the funds is laid down in the law: “The university is obliged to use the revenue to improve the quality of the study conditions and teaching. In particular, it is obliged to create the conditions for the students to be successful in their studies in a reasonable time by ensuring that the courses offered in the examination and study regulations can actually be taken up to a sufficient extent without delay. It intensifies the advice and support of the students…“ (§ 1 Abs. 3 des Gesetzes zur Verbesserung der Qualität der Studienbedingungen und der Lehre an hessischen Hochschulen vom 18.06.08).
You can submit an application to the Vice President for funds from the “Teaching Disposal Fund” for short-term measures in teaching until April 1st, 2020. The amount per project is initially limited to a maximum of € 4000. What we need from you:
- Names of applicants,

Use and amount of funds requested,

a brief description of your project (no more than half a A4 page).

The JLU will coordinate your application with the Vice President for Learning and Teaching, who will decide on the funding and give you short-term feedback (after the deadline).

In the context of the new hybrid semester concept of the Ministry of Science and Art (HMWK) for the coming winter semester 2020/21, the KDL would like to support you in designing digital learning supported teaching and inform you about new consulting services/formats, funding or changes of functions, tools and software used at JLU every 3 to 6 weeks.
