On June 13, 2024, the Panel said goodbye to Planetary Times summer fellow Connor Cook with a hike through Giessen’s Bergwerkswald that culminated in a visit to the forest adventure park Kletterwald Gießen. The team’s most agile member Cook completed the most daring and difficult 12m high trail with so much ease and to cheers from his team mates below! He and the team gained the opportunity to experience Giessen’s forests from a new vantage point: jumping, climbing, and zip lining right below treetops, they felt almost seamlessly embedded within their environment, yet remained separated from the birds and other forest inhabitants by securing technologies. The park’s complex structure of wire ropes, swings, ropeways and boardwalks not only emblematizes human impacts in forest ecosystems but also consolidates some of our semester’s insights: Human-planet relationships are inseparable from the technologies we develop; our task is to build them in view of and respect for the more-than-human world.
