Nature journal publication: “Planetary Materials” fellow Claudia Hartl & colleagues on the interrelations between jet stream, climate, and society

The work by “Planetary Materials” fellow, Claudia Hartl, has contributed to a collaborative article on “Jet stream controls on European climate and agriculture since 1300 CE,” published recently and open-access by Nature. The interdisciplinary team explores summer jet stream latitude in the North Atlantic–European sector (EU JSL) and its impacts on regional climatic extremes and societal events.

Dendrochronologist Claudia Hartl, our ”Planetary Materials” fellow in 2022, contributed to a collaborative, interdisciplinary research project on the interrelation between jet stream latitudes, the climate system, and human society. Their results were published recently by Nature under the title, “Jet stream controls on European climate and agriculture since 1300 CE”. Based on three temperature-sensitive European tree-ring records, the authors develop a reconstruction of interannual summer EU JSL variability over the period 1300–2004 CE (R2 = 38.5%) and compare it to historically documented climatic and societal records, such as, details on grape harvests, grain prices, plagues, and human mortality rates. Their results call for considering EU JSL variability while evaluating future climate risks – for more details, please find the open-access article here:
