Support at the JLU

Support at the JLU

JLU prides itself on being a family-friendly institution, and has been recognized as such on many occasions. The university can help make your career/your studies more compatible with your family life right from the start: by helping you procure appropriate accommodation, personalized information and consultations, and childcare provisions – including for regular childcare, flexible childcare, and vacation childcare.

Doctoral Students: your rights and support offers

As an enrolled doctoral student, you have access to all offers of the student union. Within the union building is the Office of Family Life, which will gladly provide you with a welcome package, and which is also the place to inquire about subsidies, such as those that cover babysitting costs.

More information on the JLU’s various offerings is available in German under the following links:

Please speak to Lena Nuechter if you need language support.

JLU employees: your rights and support offers

JLU's HR department (Dezernat C) provides relevant information on maternity protection, parental leave and more.

Please also note that employees are entitled to one day off work when their spouse or civil partner gives birth. Employees with a "Tarifvertrag" and civil servants can also take so-called "Elterntage" (parental days). Parental days mean that these employees can apply to reduce their regular work hours for up to 20 percent during the first eight weeks after the birth (with full payment of salary), provided that there are no urgent official reasons to the contrary. In the case of a full-time position, for example, this means either 8 full working days of leave, or reduced working hours for the eight weeks. An application to take the "Elterntage" must be submitted informally to the HR department via your line manager.
