During these unusual circumstances, we will be continuing our research area meetings (RA4 Visual and Material Culture) with a few special sessions acknowledging our current conditions through the intersection of disease and art. We invite you to read together Susan Sontag's essay Illness as a metaphor/Krankheit als Metapher (1978) in three sessions during May. Sontag writes about cultural discourses around illnesses such as tuberculosis, cancer, and Aids, and traces their literary traditions and relevance today.
