This workshop is designed to prepare Doctoral Candidates in FB 03, 04 and 05 for the defense of their dissertation. We will cover administrative and strategic aspects of how to organize and prepare for the defense, as well as talking about the defense process itself. The workshop is designed to include the staging of a full-length mock defense.
One volunteer will be needed to stage the exemplary mock-defense.
Volunteering for the mock defense is an excellent opportunity to prepare all aspects of the situation, and is highly recommended especially for participants whose defense takes place within the next months after the defense course. Please notify the instructor as soon as possible if this is a possibility you would like to explore. If you volunteer for the mock defense, you will have to submit a draft of your theses paper shortly before the course, and will also receive feedback on this.
All other participants are asked to prepare any questions that you may have regarding the organization and preparation for the defense, and / or regarding the defense itself, and any topics that you would especially like to be emphasized in the discussion. You are welcome to either send these to the instructor in advance, or address these issues during the course itself.
Please register for the course by 25.05.2022 at the latest with an e-mail to Imke.Polland@gcsc.uni-giessen.de. Please include the following information in your registration e-mail: a one-page abstract of your dissertation; any topics and questions for discussion; the information about whether you would like to volunteer for the mock defense and if yes, in which language.
The first part of the course will be held in English. The mock defense may be in English or German, depending on presenter’s preferences.
