Is ‘programming’ the new literacy? Much debate has happened around that question. On the one side, many believe that everyone should know how to program, or that coding is even changing what we understand as literacy. Yet others believe that, as one does not need to know how to make or repair a car to know how to drive one safely, programming is absolutely not necessary for everyone. Indeed, one can be a successful at many things, including as an academic in the Humanities, without knowing how to code.

Using the debate on ‘programming literacy’ as a theoretical jump off point, this series of workshops aims to introduce its participants to basic principles surrounding the Internet and the Web: its history and evolution, how it works, and how one can easily create simple web content. Both workshops will combine theory and practice, as participants will be introduced to different web design methods and tools that they will then implement themselves through various exercises.

The first workshop will be an introduction to web development, in which the participants will have the opportunity to create simple web content using HTML and CSS. In the second workshop, the participants will acquire basic programming skills, and will use JavaScript to modify the content of web pages. These workshops are aimed at beginners with no prior knowledge of web development.

If you are eager to know more about the foundations of web design and programming, yet have always been afraid to ask, these workshops are for you.
