As researchers, you are probably used to spending a lot of time with texts and other documents, pursuing a particular topic in depth. Networking on the other hand – going out, talking to and interacting with people you have hardly met – might feel overwhelming or awkward. However, networking is crucial for your career and professional development, in academia as well as in the corporate sector. Whether you are looking for co-authors, external sponsors for a project, for a job or for professional advice, you need connections that you can turn to and that will help you realize your goal. In this workshop, we will address typical hazards, including: how to start a conversation with someone you don’t know; how to enter a group discussion; when should you move out of your comfort zone. And we will practice useful techniques so you can improve your personal networking style.
