“Open Access” is a buzzword in recent academic discussions and funding strategies. But while the pivotal claim – to provide free and universal access to knowledge – is widely recognized, much needed OA policies are often reluctantly implemented.

So what does it mean to publish “open access”? In which direction do the key open access policy statements and documents point (e.g. Bethesda Declaration, Berlin Declaration, DFG Open-Access-Declaration, Horizon 2020)? What models and licenses are available? Which technical infrastructures are in use (e.g. OJS)? Which initiatives and projects reshape our ways of thinking of scholarly publishing (e.g. Open Peer Review, Research Data)?

This workshop provides basic information and provides information on well-established sources in this issue area. The class will be complemented with a demonstration of state of the art eJournal platforms using open source journals systems. All participants are encouraged to bring practical examples that can be discussed during the session.
