Short CV

Born in Berlin, grew up in Berlin, went to school in Berlin, studied in Berlin, lived in Berlin - until 1 August 2017, from then on expanding my territory to Giessen! I didn't actually think that my fate would lead me to the tranquil Hessian region and then to Giessen of all places! But the indomitable charm of this city lies in its authenticity. Giessen accepts itself as it is and as the people who live there, many of whom are students from all over the world, fill it with life. The surrounding countryside is also beautiful! However, I had to travel a long way to get here. After leaving school, I first worked as a veterinary assistant (today this profession is called ‘veterinary medical assistant’) in a small veterinary practice in Berlin-Tempelhof. I then went to the Lette-Verein Berlin and trained as a medical-technical assistant specialising in the laboratory. In the meantime, I could have started my studies in veterinary medicine, but I decided to finish my training. This turned out to be extremely useful for my later work in a research laboratory. After studying veterinary medicine at the Free University in Berlin, I was given the opportunity to do a doctorate in a young, up-and-coming research group at the Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin. This work was very fruitful, as I was not only able to successfully complete my doctoral thesis here, but also lay the foundations for my later research work. This gave me the opportunity to take the specialised veterinary examination in laboratory animal science (2007). After working at the Charité for almost 10 years, I moved to the German Institute of Human Nutrition in Potsdam, where I was veterinary director of the institute's Max Rubner Laboratory for eight years. This again gave me the opportunity to expand my teaching activities and I was able to complete my habilitation in experimental pharmacology at the University of Potsdam in 2014. The idea of doing more for animal welfare and improving training in laboratory animal science developed early on. I spent a long time together with Dr Kaepke from the Berlin training courses. I also always felt a connection to the research-related professions and was therefore involved in the training of MTAs, animal keepers and bio-lab technicians. Shortly after I moved to the Max Delbrück Centre for Molecular Medicine (Europe's largest laboratory animal facility), with the aim of taking over as head of the animal facility due to my age, I was offered a position at Justus-Liebig-University in Giessen. After careful consideration and intensive meetings of the family council, I was delighted to accept the position on 1 August 2017. In addition to teaching, my research focuses on improving husbandry measures for laboratory animals, as well as aspects of behavioural disorders in animals kept in captivity (stereotypies) and improving and objectifying parameters for stress assessment.
