You will require a valid student visa in order to be allowed to enter Germany to study. Nationals of the EU, the USA, and certain other countries are exempt from this regulation. Student visas are issued by the German consulate in your home country.
The following documentation have to be submitted:
- Valid passport
- Proof of health insurance
- Proof of sufficient funds available to finance your study in Germany
- Records of previous study and language skills
- Letter of admission to the Justus-Liebig-Universität Giessen
- If applying for a prospective student visa: a recognised higher education entrance qualification
- Possibly a health certificate

Sometimes it can take months for a visa to be issued, therefore it is important to apply for a visa early, even if you have not yet been accepted into a higher education institution. After arriving in Germany, please convert your visa into a residence permit.
