Getting started
On this page we provide information on the application process, preconditions, deadlines and start of studies for our master's degree programmes with an emphasis on international applicants.
In general, students can apply for a Master's programme of our faculty if they hold a Bachelor's degree with a three-year duration of the study program (at least 180 Credits).
The English Master's programmes only start in the winter semester (October).

The application period for the international degree programmes Agrobiotechnology, Insect Biotechnology and Bioresources as well as Transition Management via uni-assist starts on 1st May on www.uni-assist.de .

Application via application website of JLU
This applies to applicants with a Bachelor's degree from a German university.

Application via uni-assist
Applicants who obtained their university entrance certificate abroad and completed a Bachelor's programme at a foreign university need to apply via www.uni-assist.de.
To submit your application please register at uni-assist.de and fill in the online application forms on www.uni-assist.de.

Uni-assist checks all applications for completeness and correctness and whether the documents fullfil the requirements of the study course selected. If all requirements are met, applications are passed on to JLU Giessen.
Please note that only the applications for the study programmes Sustainable Transition and Insectbiotechnology and Bioresources require a letter of motivation.
Because of the duration of the application procedure, your application documents and the requisite processing fees must arrive at uni-assist no later than 14 days before the application deadline. Official date of receipt for your application is the day on which your application documents are determined to be complete.
Applicants submitting their application via uni-assist should note the following:
- Make sure you first register on the online portal of uni-assist. Here you can submit an application or, if necessary, more than one.
- Please transfer the official processing fees to uni-assist in good time, as inspection of your documents can only be undertaken after the fees have been paid.
Formal Preconditions
Studying a Master degree programme at the faculty of Agricultural Sciences, Nutritional Sciences and Home Economics and Environmental Management requires a Bachelor degree with a three-year duration of the study programme (180 Credits) or a comparable degree.
Relevant Bachelor Degreee Programmes
Precondition for admission to the Master degree programmes is a Bachelor degree in a relevant Bachelor programme. The relevant Bachelor programmes are listed in appendix 3 to the examination regulations (Prüfungsordnung).

Language Requirements
In order to apply for a degree programme in English, a very good command of English has to be proven. The following certificates are accepted:
- A score of at least 95 points in TOEFL-Test IBT (internet-based test) or score 7 in IELTS academic-test;or
- Local University entrance certificates in one of the following countries: Australia, Ireland, Canada, New Zealand, USA, United Kingdom, South Africa; or
- A degree in a Bachelor programme in English in one of the following countries: Australia, Ireland, Canada, New Zealand, USA, United Kingdom, South Africa; or
- UNIcert III"-Certificate.
If you would like to apply for a programme conducted in German, you need to provide evidence of German skills.

You are admitted to an academic course of study and have been allocated a place at Justus Liebig University (JLU)!
Your official confirmation of admission to JLU is provided online on the official application website of the JLU Giessen. You will receive a link to access this page. The confirmation can be downloaded in English or in German. If you need a confirmation email, please contact the office for international admission (international.admission@admin.uni-giessen.de).
With the confirmation of admission you can make an appointment at the German embassy for your student visa and it also enables you to apply for an accomodation in one of the student dormitories .
Visa
You will require a valid student visa in order to be allowed to enter Germany to study. Nationals of the EU, the USA, and certain other countries are exempt from this regulation. Student visas are issued by the German consulate in your home country.
The following documentation have to be submitted:
- Valid passport
- Proof of health insurance
- Proof of sufficient funds available to finance your study in Germany
- Records of previous study and language skills
- Letter of admission to the Justus-Liebig-Universität Giessen
- If applying for a prospective student visa: a recognised higher education entrance qualification
- Possibly a health certificate

The binding regulation for all degree programmes of the faculty 09 at Justus Liebig University are the examination regulations of the faculty 09.

English Language
The degree programmes Agrobiotechnology, Insect Biotechnology and Bioressources and Transition Management and Sustainable Transition are entirely taught in English (see § 8 Structure of the Master’s degree programmes).
All students who received admission to one of our English language degree programmes meet our language prerequisites as defined in the examination regulation of the faculty 09 at Justus Liebig University (see § 4 (3) Admission to the Master’s degree programmes).

Physical Presence
The degree programmes Agrobiotechnology, Insect Biotechnology and Bioressources and Transition Management are programmes with physical presence. Students have to reside in Germany/Giessen to attend the contact hours and follow the teaching.
The degree programme Sustainable Transition is the only digital programme in the faculty 09 Justus Liebig University.

Status of Enrolment - Arrival Date
Students who are officially enrolled at Justus Liebig University Giessen / Germany in one of the international degree programmes of the faculty 09 can start their studies in their respective degree programme Agrobiotechnology, Insect Biotechnology and Bioresources or Transition Management after they have arrived in Giessen. The enrolment certificate (green document) is legally binding and confirms that the given student is officially enrolled in the given degree programme.
Students who arrive later during a semester do not drop out of the degree programme. Our faculty09 specific course system allows an individual course timing. The study deanery of the faculty 09 /JLU Giessen provides individual counselling for international students on how to organize their studies after their arrival.
The examination regulations of the faculty 09 Justus Liebig University does not limit the study period to a certain number of semesters in any degree programme of the faculty 09.
Language of Correspondence
Our entire administration system is set up in English for the English degree programmes. Therefore, all documents, e.g. admission, transcript of records, emails within these programmes are in English only.

For enrollment the International Registrar's Office is in charge. The International Registrar's office sends an admission email to the accepted applicants together with information on how to enroll via the JLU online portal and how to create a JLU account. In the online portal the status of the application and all relevant further steps are indicated.

Permanent Student ID Card
You will receive your permanent student ID card within 3-4 days after enrolment along with a letter containing your PIN codes. Please submit your German address to the Registrar's Office as soon as possible as the ID cards are only send to a German address. Please remember that the PIN letter is an important document as it contains all passwords to register for classes and exams. In case of loss, please contact the Hochschulrechenzentrum/HRZ (university information services).

Giessen University does not charge study fees as such; it does, however, charge administrative fees. These fees currently amount to about 275 Euro per semester (approximately 290 Euro for the initial enrolment).

These fees cover:
- Semester ticket for local public transport services (further information on the semester ticket)
- Semester fee for the students' association
- Semester fee for student services
- Administrative fees
- Bond (one-time payment) for the chip-card ID at initial enrolment
- Theatre ticket and public pool flatrate
Sustainable Transition : For the entirely digital degree programme Justus Liebig University charges a semester contribution of approx. 100 EUR. This is an administrative fee and does not include the local discounts.
The administrative fees must be paid prior to enrolling at Giessen University. We recommend to transfer the administrative fees payment from within your home country. Please ensure that the transaction process is documented as you will require said documentation when enrolling at the university.
Re-matriculation
Each semester, every student is required to pay the administrative fees within a specific time period – a procedure known as re-matriculation. Failure of payment within the stipulated period will result in automatic exmatriculation.
