Research

We do interdisciplinary research in the field of psychology, nutritional sciences, ecotrophology and medicine. We work with different concepts and mainly quantitative methods.

Obesity: We investigate which factors contribute to the development of obesity. Furthermore, we are interested in how to support persons with obesity. Traditional weight-loss programs often do not lead to weight-loss, on the contrary, weight-cycling is common. New interventional programs, e.g., weight-neutral programs show first promising results, especially when focusing on metal health. Therefore, these programs should be further examined.

Psychological determinants of a healthy diet: We investigate which psychological determinants are important for shaping our nutrition behavior. For example, a high interoception (the ability to perceive body signals) is associated with a healthier diet and a lower risk of eating and weight disorders.

Family and eating: We investigate intra- and intergenerational effects of eating behavior. We are interested in understanding the similiarities and differences in eating behavior between spouses and siblings. Furthermore, we examine how parents shape their child's eating behavior and weight status.

Sustainable nutrition: We also investigate which psychological factors and motives can contribute to more sustainable food choices. Within this context, the chair of nutritional psychology will also participate at the newly founded  JLU Center for Sustainable Food Systems (ZNE).

Psychodynamic aspects of nutrition and weight: Furthermore, we investigate psychodynamic aspects of nutrition and weight. We are interested in the role of unconscious conflicts, structural abilities and mentalization for the development and maintenance of (pathological) eating behavior.
