Faculty 08 of JLU Giessen offers the following degree programmes in the field of Chemistry:

*This Master’s programme offers the possibility to obtain a double degree with our partner universities Padua University (Italy) and Kansai University (Japan).

**This Master’s programme offers the possibility to obtain a double degree with our partner universities Padua University (Italy), Kansai University (Japan), and Osaka University (Japan).

If you would like to study a degree programme taught in German, you should have sufficient knowledge of German to be able to cope well with your studies and everyday life. We recommend at least B2 level, preferably C1.

Schedule/ Teaching

The academic year at JLU comprises two semesters: winter term (1st Sept – 31 March) and summer term (1st April – 30 Sept). The lecture period usually starts 2 weeks later, see Term Dates.

Teaching is organised in modules. There are 2 types of modules:

  • taught modules on a certain topic (fixed schedule; weekly taught throughout the whole semester in German or English)
  • lab courses and research modules (for Master students; individually arranged with a supervisor; taught in English)

English modules

We have a number of modules in our Faculty that are taught in English.

The following taught modules are offered in English:

Winter semester (October – March)

Summer semester (April – September)

  • Chemie - MCG1 Electrochemistry - from basics to application (6 CP)
  • Chemie-W17 Data Science (6 CP) – duration: 2 semesters
  • Chemie-W21 Molecular symmetry and spectroscopy (6 CP)
  • Chemie-MMC2 Organic Materials (6 CP)
  • Chemie-W01 Metal and Ligand Reactivity (6 CP)
  • Chemie-MP03 Stereoselective Synthesis (6 CP)
  • Chemie-MML1 Technology and methods of mass spectrometry (6 CP)
  • SuC-MC1 Introduction to Principles of Sustainability (6 CP)
  • SuC-MC2 Seminar: New Frontiers in Chemical Sustainability (6 CP)

Incoming students who want to attend these taught modules follow the usual module schedule for winter and summer term, see electronic course catalogue (in German).

Lab courses and research modules can be arranged individually with the help of the exchange coordinator. Please note that you must attend a safety instruction for the laboratory modules (more information here).

Of course, you can also attend our German modules if you consider your German language skills to be sufficient (we recommend at least B2 level, preferably C1).
