African freshwaters
Factors (biotic and abiotic) shaping biodiversity on a continental scale are currently studied in sub-Sahara Africa. We are keen on understanding the roles both historical (e.g. paleo-drainages) and recurrent factors (e.g. climate) play for the distinct patterns observed in freshwater invertebrates. African freshwaters are among the most imperiled and endangered ecosystems on our planet. Our research therefore also focuses on applied issues and freshwater conservation aspects. Water-borne diseases affect millions of people in sub-Sahara Africa. We study selected aspects of snail-host biology on various spatial scales in African freshwaters.
