African Field Schools
International field schools (financed by the Volkswagen Foundation) are perfectly suited to connect your researchers from African countries and Germany. We have so far organized a field school in Malawi that was centred about topics in the evolution of aquatic biodiversity. Participants form Malawi, Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda, DR Congo and Germany conducted various projects at the shores of the unique rift lake Lake Malawi. Another field school in Uganda focused on freshwater ecology in general and related subjects such as sustainable, managment and conservation. Students from Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania, DR Congo, and Germany spent a wonderful month at Lake Victoria and in the Albertine Rift including famous Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. These field schools have proven to extremely successful in building regional and international networks that stimulated further projects. They resulted in long lasting academic cooperation between African academics and their German colleagues and between African researchers themselves.
