Genetics
The Institute of Genetics comprises of three sections headed by Prof. Sandra B. Hake, Prof. Reinhard Dammann and Prof. Sigurd Braun. Besides their scientific work, they are responsible for training and education of biology students (Bachelor, Master, L2 and L3). In the main research focus of the Hake and Braun group are processes tthat modify chromatin structure thereby regulating gene expression, DNA damage repair and genome stability. Furthermore, investigations on how mutations and/or transcriptional deregulation of protein complexes responsible for these processes contribute to diseases, most prominently tumor development, are at the center stage of their scientific endeavors. The Dammann group investigates epigenetic mechanisms in cancer. One focus here is on the DNA hypermethylation of genes, such as tumor suppressors. The latest techniques such as CRISPR-Bas9, epigenetic editing and 3R-compliant methods of tumor research are used.
