Concept of the MA Degree Course "Applied Theatre Studies"
The MA degree course consists of majoring in and extending both theatre theory and the practice of performative arts from a theoretical and practical point of view. The MA degree course offers students the possibility of setting their major field of study on either artistic practice (Qualification: Master of Arts “Applied Theatre Studies: Major Field of Study “Practice of Performative Arts”) or on theory (Qualification: Master of Arts “Applied Theatre Studies: Major Field of Study “Theory and Aesthetics of Performative Arts”). Professional application of the major field of study “Practice of the Performative Arts” is usually in the area of artistic practice (Stage Direction, Performative Art) and the major field of study “Theory and Aesthetics of Performative Arts” is usually in the area of dramaturgy, journalistic or editorial activities or scientific research. The close link between theatre theory and practice in both courses means that future professional application can be in both practical and theoretical areas or in combined areas. The MA degree course also consists of two modules from contributing disciplines in theatre and media as well as an MA thesis, which can be practical and artistic (for example a performance) or theoretical and scientific.
MA Degree Course Central Studies
It is the aim of the MA degree course „Applied Theatre Studies“ to enable students to reflect upon theatrical arts and artistic processes as well as their cultural and social context, also pertaining to the history of ideas both theoretically as well as practically. The basic functions, aesthetics and historical forms of theatre and their associated arts are researched and tried, both in a theoretically-scientific and artistic-practical manner. The main emphasis is placed both on a critical questioning of theatre in its contemporary manifestations and on established historical theatre forms and their theoretical and/or artistic development. During their degree, the students learn how to deal with the given and self-chosen assignment of tasks independently in practice and theory, to follow abstraction processes and train key aspects. With the successful completion of the Master’s degree course, the candidate has acquired the necessary artistic and theoretical knowledge required for the transition into professional practice and has gained an overview of the coherency of the subject. He or she has acquired the necessary skills to work according to scientific and artistic methods.
With the successful completion of the Master’s degree course, the candidate can furnish proof of a deepened capability regarding scientific work and/or artistic practice. The students can choose between two key aspects of the MA degree “Applied Theatre Studies”, “Practice of Performative Arts” (artistically-practical MA thesis) or “Theory and Aesthetics of Performative Arts (theoretically-scientific MA thesis).
MA Degree Course
The MA degree course „Applied Theatre Studies“ consists of 5 theatre science modules, 2 modules from the contributing disciplines, an “Assistenz” (advanced internship) module as well as the MA thesis module. All modules are compulsory. (Total marks: 120 CP).
Five Theatre Science Modules
- "Theory and Aesthetics": the module consists of two seminars, in which the students deal with the theory and aesthetics of performative forms of art as well as a practical course (e.g. video editing or sound studio) or a reading course.
- "Performative Practice": this module deals with practical research and experimentation with contemporary questions regarding the theatre. It consists of an artistic project and two practical courses. Instead of participating in a taught artistic project, the students can develop their own artistic project.
- "MA Module in Theatre Studies": here, the students choose two seminars, which deal with the specialised area of their MA thesis and they attend the MA colloquium, which deals with subjects, methods and problems of the students’ thesis and deepens individual questioning.
- "Specialised Module": this offers the students the possibility of attending courses regarding their MA thesis or MA production, choosing from Applied Theatre Studies and Choreography and Performance. It consists of an artistic project or artistic achievement or seminar, with which a practical course, seminar a practical course (e.g. video or sound) or reading course can be combined accordingly (see study regulations).
- "Research: Performative Aesthetics": The module is for individual prioritising with the aim of increasing one’s knowledge scientifically and artistically.
- It can be chosen by the students freely within this framework. The module components can be attended both in Applied Theatre Studies and in Choreography and Performance. It consists of an artistic project or an own artistic achievement or seminar with which a practical course, seminar or audio-visual exercise or reading course can be combined accordingly (see study regulations).
Two Modules from the Contributing Disciplines
- The module „Aesthetics and Literature" can be attended at the Institute for German Language and Literature Studies“, art history and the Institute for Music Science, it consists of two seminars and an exercise or lecture.
- The module "Interdisciplinary Extension Module" can be attended at the Institute for English Language and Literature Studies, Romance Studies, Slavonic Studies, Philosophy, Sociology and Political Science, it consists of two seminars and an exercise or lecture.
Assistenz (Advanced Internship) Module
This module consists of an advanced internship at a recognised cultural/artistic institution to gain professional knowledge and orientation.
Thesis Module
The MA thesis or the MA production is developed within the framework of the thesis module.
