If you have completed a BA Degree in Anglophone Studies or in another related field, the MA Degree in Anglophone Studies at the JLU is the ideal way to intensify your interests. Whether you did your BA Degree in Giessen or at another university, our MA Degree in Anglophone Studies gives you the opportunity to dive deeper into subjects related to Anglophone Cultures, Literature, and Media, to English Linguistics, as well as to Teaching English as a Foreign Language. The MA Degree consists of one major and one minor subject.
Students can choose
Anglophone Literary, Cultural and Media Studies (ALCMS),
English Linguistics (EL)
or
Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL)
as their major subject, and English Linguistics (EL) or Anglophone Literary, Cultural and Media Studies (ALCMS) as their minor one.
Our degree program is popular among German and international students alike. It offers opportunities for students to conduct their own research in linguistic and cultural and media analysis and engage with the newest concepts and theories of teaching English as a global language. You can take part in project-based coursework such as filmmaking, creating exhibitions, digital teaching methods, linguistic data collection and analysis, putting together learning portfolios, and more. In our courses students encounter cutting-edge research in language didactics, cultural interpretation, and media creation as well as in linguistic analysis. Interacting with this research will show you new ways of analyzing and thinking and will encourage you to discover new ways of exploring your own interests.
Courses consider recent developments in Anglophone Studies such as in in corpus linguistics or Gender, Sexuality, and Diversity Studies and advocacy. Learning about debates in these fields will allow you to engage with new forms of activism relating to gender and sexuality.
In Literary, Cultural, and Media studies, we have a traditional focus in narrative analysis, literary theory, and literary history. We have added to this with new emphases in media studies, media production as well as advertising cultures, and cultural politics.
Classes in Linguistics have a practical focus on corpus linguistics, data collection as well as data analysis. They offer hands-on training in the description and analysis of a wide range of linguistic phenomena, including computer-aided methods. The goal is to enable you to design and carry out your own linguistic research projects.
Courses in Teaching English as a Foreign Language concern how to foster students’ diagnostic competence and develop their media awareness as well as their intercultural communicative abilities.
The course of studies runs for four semesters and consists of 120 credit points. It begins in the winter semester in October of each year.
