A clear sign of freedom, democracy and tolerance
The Constitutional state as an indispensable basis for the tasks of the JLU
JLU is taking part in the nationwide #Zusammenland campaign and is thus setting an example for democracy, freedom and the constitutional state.
More than 350 universities and scientific institutions have responded to the call of several daily newspapers and provided their logo for a full-page advertisement in the "ZEIT" - including JLU. The ad states, among other things: "The current times call for a clear stance. Together, we stand for an open country that courageously faces up to the challenges instead of allowing itself to be inflamed and incited by right-wing propaganda."

Statement of the university executive board dated January 30, 2024
The university executive board of Justus Liebig University Giessen (JLU) supports the current protests and demonstrations for the preservation of freedom, democracy and tolerance. Numerous members and affiliates of JLU also sent a clear signal in this way in Giessen on January 20, 2024.
As a university, JLU is committed by law to the cultivation and development of the sciences and arts and the realization of the right to education through research, artistic creation, teaching, study and further education in a liberal, democratic and social constitutional state. This constitutional state is therefore the indispensable basis for our work in research, teaching and transfer.
We are very concerned to see that certain groups on the political right are apparently striving to abolish our constitutional state. We therefore encourage our members and relatives to stand up for the preservation of freedom, democracy and tolerance, regardless of individual party political positions.
Against this background, the JLU university executive board agrees with the following current statements from the German science and higher education system:
- Hochschulrektorenkonferenz (HRK): "Science needsliberal democracy and the constitutional state" January 23, 2024
- Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG): „Science for democracy and cosmopolitanism“ January 30, 2024
- Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst (DAAD): DAAD condemns right-wing extremist activities, January 25, 2024
- Allianz der Wissenschaftsorganisationen: We must build on an open society and a strong democracy for the future viability of our country, February 2, 2024
