Doctoral student (m/f/d)
in the field of „Mapping Plant Functional Traits“

The position is part of the externally funded project „Mapping Plant Functional Variation (MapFun)“ and is to be filled – subject to definitive approval of funds - on a fixed-term basis in accordance with § 2 WissZeitVG and § 72 HessHG with the opportunity for own academic qualification at the Chair of Landscape Ecology and Landscape Planning, Institute Landscape Ecology and Resources Management, Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, Nutritional Sciences, and Environmental Management. The project is part of the Research Unit „Agroforestry for sustainable multifunctional agriculture (FORMULA)“ funded by the German Research Foundation. MapFun is a cooperation project of the University of Gießen and the Leibniz Centre for Agricultural Landscape Research (ZALF) in Müncheberg. The salary is in accordance with the collective labour agreement of the State of Hessen (E 13 TV-H).

As long as the maximum permissible duration of a fixed-term contract is not exceeded, you will be employed for a period of four years.

Your tasks at a glance

  • Measurement of plant functional traits in the field and a glasshouse experiment
  • Biomass sampling in two agroforestry systems in Hesse and Brandenburg
  • Hyperspectral measurements at leaf and canopy level
  • Determination of nutrient contents in plants
  • Processing of hyperspectral and LiDAR data from different platforms
  • Statistical data analyses
  • Publication of project results in international peer-reviewed journals and presentation at international conferences

The provision of academic services (including the processing of a research project financed by third party funds on a temporary basis) also serves the purpose of academic qualification.

Your qualifications and competences

  • Completed Master‘s or equivalent university degree in Biology, Landscape Ecology or similar subjects
  • Knowledge in the analysis of remote sensing data / geodata with „free and open source software (FOSS)“ such as QGIS or R
  • Profound knowledge in functional ecology
  • Knowledge of operating drones and of the analysis of drone data are an advantage
  • Knowledge in the Analysis of vegetation with spectral and/or LiDAR data desired
  • Willingness to undertake intensive field campaigns
  • Experience in the lab analysis of environmental samples, willingness to learn and apply new analytical methods
  • Creative power and interest in the development and application of own scientific approaches
  • Capacity of teamwork, good communication and English skills
  • Driving licence
