The Faculty of Medicine of Justus Liebig University Giessen (JLU) and the University Hospital Giessen and Marburg GmbH (UKGM), Giessen Campus, invite applications for a

as of the earliest possible date. Reference is made to § 67 Para. 7 Hessian Higher Education Act (HessHG) and to the conditions of employment based on § 68 HessHG. Proficient knowledge of German is expected.

Duties:

You represent the entire spectrum of occupational medicine in research, teaching, and patient care. This includes conducting teaching in the field of occupational medicine at the Faculty of Medicine at Philipps University Marburg. At the JLU’s Faculty of Medicine, you provide curricular teaching in the areas of occupational and social medicine and you are involved in the teaching offerings of cross-sectional subjects as health sciences and environmental medicine.

The professorship is associated with the management of the Institute and Outpatient Clinic for Occupational and Social Medicine. Environmental medical, oncological, infectiological and psychological aspects play an increasingly important role. As part of your research, you will deal scientifically with at least one of these focal areas.

Furthermore, the institute is responsible for providing occupational medical care to students in the Faculty of Medicine according to applicable legal regulations. Starting in 2025, it will also be responsible for the occupational medical care of all employees (m/f/d) at JLU.

All tasks related to the professorship in patient care and public health services (ÖGD) are regulated through a chief physician contract by the University Hospital.

A connection to existing collaborative research projects and research foci of the JLU’s Faculty of Medicine is expected. This applies in particular to the Cluster of Excellence – Cardio Pulmonary Institute (CPI), the area of potential “Infections, inflammation and active ingredients” and the accent areas “Translational oncology” and “Repair and regeneration”. You are also expected to participate in other ongoing and planned collaborative research projects, particularly with regard to strengthening the Hessen-wide “Comprehensive Cancer Centre” (CCC), which is currently being established.

Your cooperation in established structures of the Faculty of Medicine for the promotion of young scientists and clinicians, such as the structured doctoral programme (JLU TRAINEE), the clinician scientist programme (JLU CAREER) and cooperation with the Giessen Graduate Centre for the Life Sciences (GGL), is expected. The integration of gender aspects in research and teaching is explicitly desired.

During your activity at JLU, we expect further success in independent acquisition of external funding, preferably from the DFG, BMBF, and/or the EU. Participation in relevant calls for proposals, especially within the context of the Hessian Ministry for Social Affairs and Integration (HMSI), is required. Furthermore, participation in existing research networks and the initiation of independent research projects as well as participation in other national and international networks is desired.

Your support in the ongoing DFG-funded projects at the institute is also expected.

The universities of Giessen and Marburg and the University of Applied Sciences in Central Hessen are working together in a research alliance (Research Campus of Central Hessen) as a structured cooperation based on coordinated priorities. It is expected that the applicant shows cooperativeness to university and department-wide collaborative projects. In particular, cross university/hospital patient-oriented clinical research and the participation in joint clinical studies is expected.

Requirements:

Prerequisites for the position include a successfully completed university education in medicine, the ability to scientific work for the fulfilment of the tasks according to § 67 Para. 1 HessHG, usually proven by an outstanding doctorate, and excellent additional academic achievements (e.g. habilitation or relevant, international recognised publications).

You should be internationally recognised in your field of research and should have extensive expertise in translational, clinical-close research. Success in independent acquisition (and management) of externally funded projects (preferably DFG, BMBF, EU) is a prerequisite, as well as relevant publications in recognised national and international journals.

A specialist certification in occupational medicine is prerequisite. In addition, the foundations for the acquisition of the corresponding advanced training authorization should be in possession. Further qualifications in the field of social medicine are an advantage.

In addition, proof of a special pedagogical aptitude is required as a qualification to represent the specialist field in academic teaching with great commitment and in its whole scope.

You should have experience in international cooperation and demonstrate an expectation for corresponding engagement.

You should have experience in leading a working group.

In case the candidate exceeds the basic age limit of 50 years, a civil servant appointment under § 66 Para. 3 sentences 2 and 3 Hessian Higher Education Act (HessHG) in conjunction with § 11 Hessian Career Regulation (HLVO) requires a specific functional interest.

The JLU aims to employ more women in academic research. We therefore particularly encourage female candidates to apply. JLU also pursues the goal at faculty leadership level of increased competence in dealing with gender and family-related issues. JLU is regarded as a family-friendly university. Applicants with children are very welcome. Applications from disabled people of equal aptitude will be given preference.

We strongly recommend candidates to refer to our fact sheet on application procedures. Applicants are encouraged additionally to fill in one of the forms (Bewerbungsbogen – application form).
