Workshop Description

This comprehensive workshop on light microscopy techniques will cover the entire workflow from bench to publication, equipping you with essential skills and knowledge to elevate your research and improve your imaging data quality.

  • Explore key microscopy techniques: wide-field, confocal (CLSM), 2-photon, and light-sheet microscopy.
  • Understand optics fundamentals, including objectives, refraction, aberrations, diffraction, and resolution.
  • Learn about fluorescence microscopy, fluorophores, light sources, filters, detectors, and topics like bleaching and cross-talk.
  • Watch a live demo of confocal and 2-photon microscopy, featuring remote operation of a Leica confocal microscope.
  • Capturing the perfect image: Avoid pitfalls in sample preparation, including materials, mounting, and staining. Understand what makes a good image, select the right microscope, ensure quality control, and find optimal acquisition settings.
  • Learn best practices for managing and analyzing image data. Topics include data storage with OMERO, image processing, restoration, presentation, and analysis techniques.

Trainer

Dr. rer. nat. Ioannis Alexopoulos

Ioannis Alexopoulos is a biologist with experience in light microscopy facility management. He worked as a light microscopy specialist/manager at a number of institutes and universities (Max Planck Institute for Biochemistry, Technical University of Munich, Radboud University in the Netherlands), and then he took over the coordination of the Multiscale Imaging Platform at the Institute for Lung Health (ILH). The Multiscale Imaging Platform is located at the Centre for Infections and Genomics of the Lung (CIGL), is equipped with cutting-edge light microscopy instrumentation and provides consultation, personalised training and technical support for a wide range of applications.
