Interdisziplinärer Workshop Data Collection and Visualization of Networks in History and Culture
ZMI, GCSC und Herder-Institut Marburg veranstalten am 16. November 2017 gemeinsam den Workshop Data Collection and Visualization of Networks in History and Culture. Die von Prof. Katharina Stornig (ZMI-Sektion 4/GCSC), Dr. Elke Bauer und Dr. Victoria Harms (jeweils Herder-Institut) organisierte Veranstaltung eröffnet am 15. November 2017 mit einem öffentlichen Vortrag von Dr. Martin Stark (Institut für Landes- und Stadtentwicklungsforschung). Das Programm sieht folgende Themenschwerpunkte vor:
Over the last decade, network analysis has made its way from a fringe theory to an established albeit minor methodology in historical research that goes beyond a purely metaphorical use of the term "network". A substantial number of studies on different topics and periods have shown that network theories and formal network methods developed in other disciplines can be fruitfully applied to various bodies of historical sources. Recognizing the growing importance of digital research tools and methods in the humanities and social sciences, the workshop aims at exploring the potential of processing and visualizing network data for the broader field of the study of history and culture. The speaker, Dr. Martin Stark (Hamburg/Aachen), is specializing in network theories and the development of digital tools for historical research. He will host a two-part-series of events. On the first day, Dr. Stark will introduce his research and relevant concepts, methods, and theories in the framework of a public lecture, followed by a discussion. On the second day, Dr. Stark will hold a hands-on workshop, which aims at providing registered participants the possibility to adapt the digital methods presented in the lecture via applying open source tools to their own research questions and projects. With Dr. Stark’s assistance, each participant is invited to bring his or her own research data and use the findings to visualize the implicit historical networks.
The workshop, a collaboration between the GCSC, the Herder Institute and the ZMI, is open to all graduate students, researchers, and staff interested in digital history. No prior knowledge of digital history is required. Participants are expected to bring their own laptops. Material to process will be provided, but individual findings can be used, too. Please indicate your preference in your registration email. In order to register, please send a short email summarizing your study/research interests and motivation to participate in this workshop by November 5, 2017, to victoria.harms. This informal email will only be used to better service your needs.
