Dr. Xoplaki has a PhD in Climate Science awarded by the Faculty of Sciences, University of Bern, Switzerland, and is currently acting Head of the Climatology, Climate Dynamics and Climate Change Group at the Institute of Geography, Justus Liebig University in Giessen. In this role, she researches climate change and its impacts and teaches at the Department of Geography at the BSc and MSc levels.
She is an expert on climate change in the Mediterranean and has carried out analyses on extreme weather conditions (heat waves, floods, droughts, etc.) as well as on health effects and paleoclimatology. Climate reconstructions / model comparison, influence of the circulation on the European and Mediterranean climate. She has participated in and coordinated several European, Swiss and US research projects.
