GGS-Teaching Assistantship Programme Light 2022
The GGS Teaching Assistantship Programme offers international (post)doctoral candidates the chance to gather teaching experience and develop their skills.
This year's application phase ended on September 29, 2022.
What is the GGS Teaching Assistantship Programme (TAP) about?
- For international (post)doctoral candidates it is often difficult to gather teaching experience at JLU Giessen as classes at the Bachelor's and Master's level are mainly held in German. Therefore, the GGS is happy to announce the 10th round of the GGS Teaching Assistantship Programme, but this time in a slightly modified form. While the programme has featured a series of weekly lectures in the last few years, this year it consists of only a limited number of workshops that are thematically designed to fit the focus of the GGS.
The aim of the GGS Teaching Assistantship Programme is to offer international (post)doctoral candidates the chance to gather teaching experience, which is a key skill if you intend to pursue an academic career. If you would like to know more about the GGS Teaching Assistantship Programme, have a look at the Teaching Assistantship Programmes of the previous few years, but please note the above-mentioned modification.
What is my role in the Teaching Assistantship Programm Light?
In the "light"-version of the TAP you apply only for holding your own workshop. You are teaching other doctoral candidates in a field of your expertise.
The usual framework does not apply, there is no Teaching Assistantship Workshop and Lecture Series
You are not part of a group, your workshop will be a singular event integrated in the regular GGS curriculum
There are no organized preparation workshops to attend
And most important: Your workshop topic must fit within the GGS subject profile and therefore be within the following interdisciplinary areas of expertise:
- Methods of empirical social research such as interview techniques, questionnaire construction, mixed methods approaches, video analysis, etc.
- Methods of quantitative or qualitative data analysis with a focus on softwares: R, Python, MPlus, SPSS, STATA, Maxqda, F4 analysis etc.
- Statistical methods such as Bayesian statistics, panel analysis, regression analysis, multivariate methods, time series analysis, etc.
- Academic skills such as academic writing, managing one's PhD, writing external funding proposals, project and time management for academia, peer review, publication skills, etc.
- Professional skills such as rhetoric training, presentation techniques, process management, etc.
What do I get out of participating in the Programme?
The TAP enables you to...
- develop your own teaching concept and give a workshop for doctoral students,
- gain teaching experience,
- receive valuable feedback on teaching competence,
- and earn money at the same time.
If you are an international doctoral candidate, please feel invited to share your ideas for paid teaching assistantships (16,50 € per hour including preparation and lecture time).
Hourly wage | Preparation time | Lecture Time | Total | |||
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Workshop: | 16,50 € | 14 h | 4 h | 297,00 € | ||
Workshop: | 16,50 € | 24 h | 8 h | 528,00 € |
Please note that the Programme is designed exclusively for GGS members (how to become a member) who have obtained their university entrance qualification (Hochschulzugangsberechtigung, A-level's, or similar) outside of Germany. Please note also that the TAP workshops 2022 will take place in person & on site.
Which kind of courses will be offered within the TAP depends on your ideas and on how well they fit the requirements of the GGS. Would you like to offer an academic writing training for doctoral candidates, and even postdocs? Are you experienced in research fieldwork or a method-expert that other GGS members might benefit from? Are you well-versed in writing proposals, conducting discourse analysis, qualitative or quantitative methods? Tell us about your ideas, even if you are not entirely sure if they qualify for our programme!
How can I apply?

The application deadline was September 29, 2022.
What are the selection criteria?
The programme is created exclusively for doctoral candidates and postdoctoral researchers in the faculties of Law, Economics and Business Studies, and Social Sciences and Cultural Studies at JLU Giessen as well as for doctoral candidates and postdoctoral researchers from other JLU faculties whose research interests are in line with the GGS research profile.
Your applications will be evaluated based on
- fit with the research interests and focuses of the GGS
- clear and consistent description of the project idea
- quality of the didactic concept
- practicability of the course plan/ time schedule
- attractiveness of the course for doctoral candidates of the GGS
